Warhol portrait of Conrad Black sold !!!

16 November 2007 25 comments

Update on Christie's auction this week

A portrait of Conrad Black was sold for $240,000 (£116,000) at Christie’s in New York on Wednesday to help pay off the former media baron’s debts.

Christie's is holding its bi-annual Post War and Contemporary Art Sale

A Los Angeles art dealer, Michael Kohn, bought the portrait, one of four which Andy Warhol made in 1981, when Black was 37.

Portrait of Conrad Black", measuring 40 inches square, was part of a sale by the world’s largest auction house that has confounded fears of a collapse in the contemporary art market as the credit crunch in the US has hit the spending power of even the very rich.

In the first session, on Tuesday night, a Warhol portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, owned by the actor Hugh Grant, went for $23.6m after Christie’s had predicted a sale price of at least $25m. [more]

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is the day Australians remember those who have died in war.

In 1918 the armistice that ended World War I came into force, bringing to an end four years of hostilities that saw 61 919 Australians die at sea, in the air, and on foreign soil. Few Australian families were left untouched by the events of World War I - 'the war to end all wars' most had lost a father, son, daughter, brother, sister or friend.

At 11am on 11 November we pause to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts and all those who have served during the past 100 years.

A Must See Film !!!!!

9 November 2007 16 comments

Both my Grandmother and my Auntie on my Father's side both suffered from Alzheimer’s disease before they passed away.
This film will be a must see for me.
Julie Christie is one of my favourite actresses.

Away From Her is the lyrical screenplay adaptation of celebrated author Alice Munro’s short story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain”.
Away From Her is a beautifully moving love story that deals with memory and the circuitous, unnameable paths of a long marriage. Married for 50 years, Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona’s (Julie Christie) commitment to each other appears unwavering, and their everyday life is full of tenderness and humour. This serenity is broken only by the occasional, carefully restrained reference to the past, giving a sense that this marriage may not always have been such a fairy tale. This tendency of Fiona’s to make such references, along with her increasingly evident memory loss, creates a tension that is usually brushed off casually by both of them. As the lapses become more obvious and dramatic, it is no longer possible for either of them to ignore the fact that Fiona is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. [ More]

2 November 2007 19 comments

I received this entry form in the post this week...
I will probably enter the portrait of Alexander....

About Moran

The Moran Health Care Group is the benefactor of the two Moran Prizes.
Established in 1956 by Doug and Greta Moran, The Moran Health Care Group is a family-run, aged-care provider. Doug Moran was inspired by the Australian public’s love of portraiture to create the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. He also wanted to create a vehicle to support established and developing artists. A skilled painter herself, Greta Moran has worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize since its inception in 1988.Her son, Mark Moran – Director of Operations for the Group – continues the family tradition with Moran’s patronage of a new arts initiative, the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize, now in its second year.
