Persistence and determination....

10 June 2008 17 comments

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

Calvin Coolidge quotes (American 30th President of the United States, 1872-1933)

    Hello Kim,

I like the quote on this post.

There are indeed a lot of educated people who are derelicts, or have been overcome by defeatist attitudes and just surrendered to depression.

Some have been spending their lives wasting away and see the negatives about everything and rail against it, without considering and even dismissing the positive.

Worse are those who used their education to oppress, dominate, hurt, plunder, and ruin people and countries.

I do believe that most, if not all, great universities in the world produce the noblest of men and the worst of scoundrels.

We should have more artists as I always say! :-) --Durano, done!

I have always liked this quote and have it in one of my sketchbooks. Nice to read it again and be reminded to just hang in there.

What a great quote - and such a sweet photograph to go with it. A reminder that all great artists (and ballerinas) had to start out once got where they are through sheer persistence (and a lot of talent!)
    :-)

they are very sweet aren't they?
I thought it was a good choice of image for this marvellous quote because there is a lot of discipline and persistence involved in ballet...and yes having talent does help ;)

    re coolidge:

"The political genius of President Coolidge, Walter Lippmann pointed out in 1926, was his talent for effectively doing nothing: "This active inactivity suits the mood and certain of the needs of the country admirably. It suits all the business interests which want to be let alone.... And it suits all those who have become convinced that government in this country has become dangerously complicated and top-heavy...." "

well that's the first time I've heard of active inactivity....very interesting....
I wonder if it's like active listening or active reading...hmmm
I could relate it to my art as my pursuits have been fairly actively inactive..of late......ie all in the head but the paint's not going on the brush lol...
