"The Flying Dutchman"
24 September 2007 Labels: André Rieu, Portrait, Portrait of André Rieu 37 commentsGouache on Canvas 90cm x 1m I painted this portrait last week and it was presented to this very famous musician yesterday..... Question # 25 Who is this famous person? Question #26 What musical instrument does he play? Question # 27 What nationality is he? André Rieu.com - The official website: André Rieu Andre Rieu Fans Fans & Friends Around The World I have posted 3 questions today and will be posting the last 3 questions on the 27th September..... |
Wow! I love the freedom of expression you have captured. Nothing else would have worked quite so well. I think it is very fitting to his personality. Congratulations! A great portrait to do.
Well he's one gorgeous hunk of a man, JB, but I don't have a clue who he is. I had a flatmate once whose nickname was Dutch but he didn't look anywhere near this bloke although he was a good looking man in his time. ~:o)
Just color me "clueless".
He is Andre Rieu, over here in Aus at the moment on a promotional tour in advance of a major concert tour next year - which looks as if it will be spectacular. He plays the violin and comes from The Netherlands - not surprising considering the portrait name :-)
I claim an unfair advantage with this one as he has been on radio and TV here a lot the last week :-)
People are lining up from first light to get him to sign his DVD, which he has been doing at a rate of 16 a minute. Just a bit of trivia for you there:-)
What a thrill for you to do a portrait and meet him, Kim.
OK I am feeling like Inspector Clouseau now....I have never heard of this guy but I will go out on a limb and suggest that he is Andre Rieu, who plays the violin and was born in the Netherlands.
My evidence is that
a) He is in Australia at the moment.
b) He was presented with a portrait the other day.
c) There is a DVD about or by him called 'The Flying Dutchman'
d) He looks like your beautiful portrait!
If it's not him then I give up but I still like the portrait...
Another incredible portrait Kim :-)
I'd be cheating to say anything at this point, because I didn't have a clue myself. But a very handsome man. He must have been surprised and very pleased :-)
thanks Boyd
My Mum is a big fan of Andre Rieu and my Dad listened to his music constantly for many years.....he was a very easy subject to paint....and I'm very happy with the outcome.. :)
haha MA
there are videos on You Tube of Andre Rieu at the bottom of this page......great listening and viewing....and so entertaining :)
there were thousands at Warringah Mall yesterday...Sue.....
I imagine that his concerts will be sold out immediately.....as they are spectacular events...he will be touring 5 states and of course we will be getting tickets for his Sydney Performance.. :)
very good detective work Diane...
you are so right.... :D
the portrait took 3 days to paint and I was very pleased with the likeness......
hi Deborah....
I had been thinking about painting Andre Rieu since early this year...I play his music when I am painting and sometimes end up dancing to it instead of painting..... :)
whoa.. what a beautiful portrait Kim.. he must have loved it... :)
so theres only 3 questions left eh? I so wish I could keep up with all the questions and the fun, but I'll definitely be coming around to read up all the answers .... :)
Looks like you had fun meeting Andre :) I don't have any of his music but definitely will try to listen to some now....
hi Pearl
yes the music is wonderful and he has the most wonderful guest artists as well....
the DVD's are marvellous......
you would enjoy them..... :)
Wow. Awesome artwork!
thank you Insane Writer ...:)

I totally forgot that I entered the contest for this in the beginning.lol Ohh well. I've been much to busy to look up answers. Good luck to the rest of you! :)
hi Joy
I'll probably have another competition before Christmas......... :)
Oh that's not fair for slow pokes like me...are you doing this again? I'm a little slow on the uptake Kim????
Soon????
Haha Ev...
you picked the wrong time to go away on your fantastic writing course/holiday in Maui....
I will probably hold another one late October and I'll probably post the questions in groups of 5....I'll let you know when it happens :)
I meant to tell you how much I like your re-design. I think it really sets off your artwork well.Your page is loading so much quicker too:-) Well done.
thanks Sue
your advice was a great help !!!!
I have just widened the header and I will cut down the sidebars after the competition.... I have noticed a real difference in the page loading and you're right the white space does make a big difference to my artworks.....now all I have to do is go back in my posts to find all of my white text...and change it ....haha it could take til Christmas :)
I have no idea, but if it would have been a picture of "The Dunking Dutchman," I would have been able to answer Rik Smits immediately.
haha ....Scottsdale...
I don't think
"The Flying Dutchman" is renowned for basketball.....lol
I finally checked out Andre Rieu on YouTube, JB, and now I feel a bit foolish in that I know who this man is now, you lucky, lucky dawg, you.
Moreover, I feel in love with a young chap Akim Camara while checking out Mr Rieu's action. See for yourself. Both Rieu and this Akim kiddo. The performance took place in the Netherlands.
I have seen this performance MA....and he is now 5 years old.....adorable isn't he and of course a child prodigy :D
I hadn't seen it until just now although I relate to Andre's participation in River Dance. It was one of my favs to watch when PBS showed it on the boob tube. It's at Googlevideo now, or it was at one time, anyway.
Akim was adorable and it also showed Andre's sense of humor and patience with children. I really like that. Then again, I have fun with kids. Most adults get mad at me whenever kids are around because I'd rather play with them then talk adult talk.
ahh yes JB...:D
I can see you doing that....having fun with the kids :D
I haven't seen the River Dance Video...so will have to look it up....I'm a great fan of River Dance too !!!!
Hi Kim,
I'm just too far behind now lol, never mind :)
That is an awesome portrait and I'm sure That Andre Rieu would have been extremely pleased with it.
ps: there is an award waiting for you when you're passing sometime:
http://grottynosh.wordpress.com/2007/09/25/awards/
hi Colin....
I'm sure to have another competition before the end of the year.....
another award !!!...gee I wonder what it could be ???? :D
Great work. Its nice to hear people get excited over a real musician for a change. I admit, I did have to google him... :P
hey Las Vegas Guy...
It is refreshing isn't it......I just wish that we could nominate Mr Rieu for "President of the World"...because I (and probably millions of others) would certainly vote for him.... :D
That is a great drawing. I would have known without any hints that it is André Rieu, and yet it also shows your interpretation as an artist.
Yes, Andre took Australia by storm or possibly that is the other way around. 9 of the top 10 DVDs are Andre's and 13 of the top 15. That's amazing. A first for any chart.
I would love for you to write a story about this portrait and share it on AndreRieuFans(.com). All the Fans would appreciate seeing this. :D
You are invited to pop over to our blog and have a looksee and say hello! Everyone is nice and loves to share & chat.
Sally <~~ can't write my name and make it look good

hi Sally
so nice to meet you and it's great that you have a fan club for Andre Rieu....thanks so much for your invite...I will certainly pop over to your site.....
have a wonderful day :)
Kim, Great portrait of Andre Rieu! Andre has done a great job bringing the waltz & other classical music to a younger audience playing at the places youg people go. I had the opportunity to listen to him once. It was strange, but it seemed like a blow of fresh air... It was a pleasure see him play his stradivarius. I am sure Andre must have loved the portrait you made of him.
thanks Laura.....
you were lucky to see him perform and hear his music IRL...
have a great week :)
so who is this Flying Dutchman? is he really good? never heard of him before hahahaha I should check him out :)
Hug hug long time no visit.
cheers
you really should check out this wonderful musician/violinist Netster....
I'm sure you will love his music :))
good to hear from you :)
Trust me, this guy is good. He is one of the biggest (classical) performers in Europe. Next to being a good musician he is also a good entertainer.
I agree Matthijs !!!!!
I know this has nothing to do with your picture, but my kids were just watching spongebob and it was the episode with the flying dutchman. It made me chuckle when I read this post :D
Yes I heard something about his music,he's really good violinist and classical musician. Nice Picture.
